Meet the Make a Difference Marathon Riders

These are the ten members of the SHLF who will be completing the trans-Canada ride. Riding in pairs, the team will cover the country in a non-stop relay format: pairs will ride 3 hours at a time, take twelve hours off while the four other pairs go, then hop back on their bikes for another 3 hours.

Help support our riders knowing that their efforts will be making a difference. You can submit a pledge for an individual rider, pledge the whole team or donate directly to the Foundation - you will be helping the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation reach its goal. To donate directly to the Foundation, click here.

We thank you for your support, and look forward to seeing you along the route or at a ground event in your city!

Favourite Quote
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you Not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the World. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." - Marianne Williamson (referenced in Nelson Mandela's "Long Walk to Freedom")

What inspires you?
The potential for greatness that is in each and every person. I have been extremely fortunate to have been given the family, mentors, opportunities and gifts to push my own boundaries and follow my dreams. The notion that everybody has the capacity to do and be amazing if given the right opportunities is exactly what inspires me.

Top 5 moments in your life?
1 Watching my brother Strachan get married.
2 Watching my sister Blythe qualify for the 2000 Olympics with my brothers while wearing matching sneakers.
3 Completing the Lake Tahoe Marathon with my mom.
4 Giving my father a surprise trip to the 2007 Rose Bowl.

Why are you doing this ride?
Because Wyatt is making me! I whole-heartedly believe in the work that the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation does. I have committed my life to it. I believe in the capacity of ordinary Canadians to expand their world view, to tap into their own potential and to commit themselves to making a difference. If it takes a bike ride across Canada to make that message clear, then Ill do it! It is also a rare opportunity to join with friends and family of my brother Strachan to honour him, build his Foundation and achieve a remarkable challenge.

Favourite memory of Strachan
There are too many.
He used to say that the best day of his life was watching Blythe qualify for the 2000 Olympics. He was living in Montreal at the time, where the trials were. Wyatt and I traveled to stay with him. It was the most incredible sunny, Montreal summer weekend. Wyatt, Strachan and I wore matching shoes the whole time and called ourselves Team Hartley. Blythe was 16 at the time and very nervous. During her final dive at the Trial, after 2 days and 3 rounds of competition, we were all bursting with excitement and emotion and watched closely. Seconds felt like hours. While she stood on the board about to go, I looked at Strachan's eyes and saw in them exactly what I felt – pure, simple, perfect love. For Blythe, and thereby for us all. When she landed on her head (a good thing in diving) she had made it to the Olympics. With tears in my eyes I looked and saw the same in his. They only lasted a second before his face exploded into a smile and he ran down to the pool deck to bear-hug Blythe. It was a great day.

Message to readers
The Make a Difference Marathon is dedicated to Strachan's legacy and will benefit a truly, great cause. It has been an honour and pleasure to work with the phenomenal people involved with the Foundation in our first year. I can assure you that we will just keep getting better and that we will achieve our mission and change the lives of many, many people for years to come. Please help us make a difference.

Favorite memory of Strachan
Playing football against Strachan (Queen’s vs McGill, 2000). There was one play where we optioned the halfback, which happened to be Strachan. Strachan was protecting the outside, so the quarterback kept the ball and was tackled almost immediately by a group that included Strachan. Almost immediately, as if he had never hit the ground, Strachan sprang to his feet and spun around to face me. Both of us were grinning from ear to ear because we both realized that we had come so close to the one-on-one moment that we were waiting for.

Why you are participating
Strachan was driven throughout his life by the goal of making a difference in this world. Being involved in a group that lives their life with the same mission is my way of honouring Strachan and helping him to realize his goal.

Message to readers
Strachan’s success in life came because he was surrounded by people and programs that allowed him to work as hard as he did to meet his full potential. There are so many people in this world that do not find themselves in a similar position, people who do not have the ability to control their own destinies. The goal of the foundation is to provide programs to these people that will help them to realize the potential that exists in them. I hope that you will support us achieve our mission.

Inspiration?
I tend to be inspired most by those with whom I am closest: my Mother and Father; Porkchop; my nieces and nephews; and my friends who seem to continually accomplish increasingly amazing personal, professional and athletic feats.

Top 5 moments in your life?

In progress, and to be assessed in time.

Why are you doing this ride?
Strachan and I previously endured an incredibly botched cycling adventure in S.E. Asia so, well, I pretty much owe him a successful cycling trip. Aside from this debt, it's really rewarding on a personal level to know that I can play a small role in something that aims to make a difference in the lives of others.

Favourite memory of Strachan
I'll always remember our road trips, which ranged from the local variety (Kelowna) to the not-so local sort (Cambodia). And I'll never forget talking to Strachan immediately after his wedding when – despite doctors' grim predictions, his hairless head, and the reduction of a former football all-star to a mere skeleton of his former self – for that one brief moment where we laughed about the past, revelled in the present, and silently ignored an unmentionable future, everything seemed to have somehow fallen exactly into place.

Why are you doing this ride?
For Hartley – an incredible friend who went much too early. Hartley stated that "maybe I can make a bigger difference in my passing than I can in my life", and I want to do what I can to honour his statement – to raise awareness of SHLF across the country so that Strachan's legacy will indeed make a BIG difference in the lives of youth and families who lack the privileges and opportunities that we tend to take for granted.

Favourite memories of Strachan
Playing both recreational/organized sports with and against him from highschool through university. The intensity with which he did ANYTHING was always inspiring (and, at times, quite comedic). Once Strachan had his mind made up about something, there was no stopping him, and one knew it would only be a matter of time until he reached his goal - and at an exceptionally high level. Strachan and I went on quite a few road trips together, and he would have loved this adventure – he will be top of mind as we pedal across the country, and I only hope that we as a Foundation can achieve our goals on this trip in the same manner Strachan would have - with intensity, with a sense of humour, and with outstanding results.

Strachan once telling me he wrote 20 sentences instead of the 10 required sentences for our vocabulary words. I really didn’t understand that until I was much older.

What inspires you?
I am inspired by the stories of hard working individuals who have the courage, conviction and discipline to put forth the effort, and take the risks necessary to follow their dreams.

Top 5 moments in your life?
No way!

Why are you doing this ride?
I am doing this ride 1) to see Canada “close up” and 2) more importantly to help the SHLF to grow.

Favourite memory of Strachan
I have a number of memories of Strachan, in the locker room, on the team bus, etc… but I’ll remember his competitiveness on the football field most.

Message to readers
When pressed, I have found the term “leadership” to be rather abstract and difficult to define, however, that is not at all to say that it is difficult to identify leadership. Strachan was an unquestioned leader of the McGill Football team, when I was fortunate enough to play beside him. Since getting to know the other Hartleys’ better in recent months I have been impressed by the same leadership qualities throughout their family. One could say that I am doing this ride because I am still following the lead of Strachan and the rest of Harlteys in trying to “Make a Difference.” My hope is that in providing educational and academic opportunities to underprivileged children we will foster the emergence of future leaders in their respective communities.

Why are you doing this ride?
It embodies what Strachan stood for. Hard work and persistance will result in a positive outcome.

Favourite memories of Strachan

1. Football: At UBC we both played on the wide side of the field. He lined up behind me as a half back and they had a blitz called "The Hammer" which gave Strachan freedom to go all out. I loved it because every time it was called he basically got either a sack or stuffed the running back and I basically would stand there and watch it play out.

2. Travelling: After Strachan came back from his trip through South East Asia and Australia he would not stop talking about how great it was. I was so sold on his enthusiasm that I went and booked the same trip on the same airline with the same travel agent that he used.

3.Personal: Strachan was the first one of my friends to meet my future wife.

3 UFE Marks Day – November 2007
4 New Years Trip to Hawaii – December 2004
5 World Alpine Junior Championships – Norway 1996, Switzerland 1997

Favorite memory of Strachan
I did not have the pleasure of knowing Strachan, however, I have had the opportunity to ski race with Aimee as members of the BC Ski Team and Wyatt via the CA articling route at KPMG. My experiences with both Aimee and Wyatt provide me the insight into Strachan’s character and legacy.

Why you are participating
Strachan was extremely driven to reach his potential in both sports and education and he was very thankful for the tremendous support and opportunity in his life. Similar to Strachan, I have been the recipient of ample support and opportunity in both sports and education in my life. The idea of being able to give back and provide other less fortunate but equally talented individuals with similar opportunities is the least I can hope to achieve and at the same time I have the opportunity to honour an outstanding individual.

Message to readers
I am involved with this foundation with the simple goal of truly “Making a Difference” in people’s lives. I believe that the creators and administrators of this foundation have a strong mission and vision, but most importantly have Strachan’s determination to carry out his goal of “Making a Difference”. I encourage everyone to become interested in our various efforts and support our initiatives in any capacity to help us “Make a Difference”.
